In this project, ALTEN got the opportunity to contribute with the development of a new class III-catheter with 5 lumens that enables continuous monitoring of patient’s blood glucose level.

Truly continuous monitoring of a patients blood glucose levels increasing patient safety and comfort while freeing up staff-time and eliminates the risk for trend gaps and enables proactive glycemic control. Continuous lactate surveillance ensures visibility on lactate trends which apart from offering prognostic information will also aid the evaluation of ongoing therapy.

In this project, we was challenged with the development of a new class III catheter with 5 lumens. Guide, sample, medical treatment and two for micro dialysis. The walls between the lumens in the 2,3mm catheter are down to 0,08 mm (80 micro). To connect a tube to each one of those 5 lumens without leakage between them, forced us to invent a complete new production method.

The result became EIRUS and EIRUS Central Venous Catheter, which both are registered trademarks of Maquet Critical Care AB.
