Interview with Rebecka Danielsson: “It’s important to take chances when they present themselves. That’s how I’ve been able to get my assignment in the area I want to develop.”

From the deep forests of Småland via KTH’s engineering programme to ALTEN. Today, Rebecka Danielsson works in project management and has the opportunity to contribute where she’s really needed. She’s currently on assignment at Transmission Manufacturing at Scania as project manager for two gearbox projects.

It all started in 2013 with a move from small Agunnaryd, also known as the A in IKEA, in Småland to Stockholm. For the next five years, Rebecka studied material design with a master’s degree in strength science. But it wasn’t exactly set in stone that she would choose material design.

– I was originally applying for engineering design at a bunch of universities when my student counselor tipped me off that materials design was similar, so I applied for that too. It turned out not to be the same at all, but I had a great time and decided to pursue it.

The years at KTH were both rewarding and fun, with lots of studying interspersed with activities and festivities. Her time at university gave Rebecka friends for life and many good insights to take with her into the world of work. One of the most important lessons is as simple as it is true:

– Dare to ask! Ask about anything and everything. Instead of going around figuring things out for yourself. Of course, some things can be explored and found out by yourself, but as a rule, I’d really say just ask.

The many possibilities of a consultant

The goal after her studies was to find a job with a wide range of options and good development potential – and the choice fell on ALTEN. In 2018, Rebecka was offered a job as a calculation engineer: The assignment started in the autumn straight after her graduation. Since then, Rebecka has had time to work in-house on two other assignments, before landing the role of project manager towards Transmission Manufacturing at Scania.

– The advantages of being a consultant, being able to try out several different companies and different tasks, really gives you the chance to develop. Not only in your work role, but also as a person by constantly learning to be able to adapt to different situations. I started out as a computational engineer, but I’ve always wanted to work in project management. Through ALTEN, I knew I could get that opportunity.

An important trait to develop in the role of a consultant is to dare to speak your mind, to have a clear direction and to dare to try.

I think it’s really important to take chances and opportunities when they present themselves. That’s how I’ve been able to get my job in the field I want to develop in.

Community – both on and off assignment

For Rebecka, community is also important. She keeps in touch with several former colleagues, even though they have also changed assignments, and says that the feeling of togetherness and having fun at work leads to higher productivity.

Every time you change assignments, there’s a bit of a ‘new at work’ feeling. It’s nice to have someone to turn to. To be able to take an extra five minutes at the coffee machine or a lunchtime walk together. There are a lot of people my age working at ALTEN, which is great!
